Dr. Karen B. Dunlap has devoted more than 30 years to the education of journalists and aspiring journalists. She is president of The Poynter Institute as well as a Trustee at Poynter. She is also a member of the Board of Directors of the (Tampa Bay) Times Publishing Company, the board of the Newspaper Association of America Foundation and Eckerd College Board of Trustees.

She has led seminars on writing throughout the nation and abroad, and is co-author of The Effective Editor with Foster Davis and of The Editorial Eye with Jane Harrigan.

Paul C. Tash

Chairman and CEO of the Times Publishing Company and Chairman of Poynter's Board of Trustees

Paul C. Tash is the chairman and CEO of the Times Publishing Company. A native of South Bend, Indiana, Tash graduated summa cum laude from Indiana University in 1976. He received a Marshall Scholarship and graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor of laws degree from Edinburgh University in Scotland in 1978. He started with the Times that fall as a local news reporter. He also has been a Tallahassee reporter, the city editor, metropolitan editor, Washington bureau chief and executive editor for the Tampa Bay Times.

Jana Jones

Treasurer, The Poynter Institute; CFO, Tampa Bay Times

Jana L. Jones joined the St. Petersburg Times in March 2004 as Chief Financial Officer, bringing with her 20 years of financial experience from banking and newspapers. As CFO she is responsible for all accounting functions, financial analysis and reporting, strategic planning, investments, risk management and corporate relationships with bankers, attorneys and auditors. Jana holds B.S. and M.B.A degrees in Finance from California State University.

Andy Barnes

Poynter Trustee, Poynter Chairman and CEO Emeritus

Andy Barnes is a native of New York City and a graduate of Harvard University where he took his degree in history. He began his professional career on the Providence (R.I.) Journal. After two years in the Army, he joined the Washington Post in 1965. During his eight years at The Post, he rose from reporter to deputy metropolitan editor before taking charge of The Post’s education bureau. During 1969-70, he traveled in Europe and Africa on an Alicia Patterson Fellowship studying urban change. In 1973, Barnes joined the St.

Andy Corty

Poynter Trustee, President and Publisher of Florida Trend

Andy Corty is president and publisher of Florida Trend, the statewide magazine that reaches business executives, government officials, and civic leaders throughout Florida. Andy also serves as vice president and secretary of the Board of Directors of Times Publishing, which owns Trend, and as an officer on the boards of other affiliated entities. After growing up in Wilmington, Delaware, Andy received his bachelor’s degree from Harvard College where he majored in economics and his M.B.A. from Stanford University Graduate School of Business.

Anne Hull

Poynter Trustee, Washington Post reporter

Anne Hull is a national reporter at the Washington Post. Her stories exposing the mistreatment of wounded soldiers at Walter Reed Army Medical Center along with Post colleague Dana Priest were awarded the 2008 Pulitzer Prize for Public Service. Hull is a recipient of the Elijah Lovejoy Parish Award from Colby College for her career coverage of social justice. She has written for The New Yorker magazine and her stories have been anthologized her journalism textbooks. Before joining the Post, Hull was a reporter for the St. Petersburg Times.

Kinsey Wilson

Poynter Trustee

Kinsey Wilson has played a leadership role in digital media for more than a decade. As a senior news executive he has provided strategic and operational oversight of print and online news operations and been a leader in industry organizations during a period of rapid technological and cultural change. He joined NPR as Senior Vice President and General Manager of Digital Media in October 2008, with responsibility for NPR’s web, podcasting and mobile operations. With Ellen Weiss, NPR’s Senior Vice President for News, he oversees the online news and music staffs.

Dr. Maria D. Vesperi

Poynter Trustee

Dr. Maria D. Vesperi is a cultural anthropologist with research interests in urban issues, anthropology and journalism, social welfare policy, early industrial history and cultural constructions of aging and race. She is Professor of Anthropology at New College of Florida, the all-honors college of the Florida state university system. Vesperi earned her doctorate from Princeton University in 1978, based on a study of low-income white and African-American elders in St. Petersburg, Florida.

Owen J. Roberts

Poynter Trustee

Owen J. Roberts was born and raised in Madison, Wisconsin, the son of the late Glenn D. Roberts, a prominent attorney there, and law partner of Philip F. LaFollette, whose family led the Wisconsin Progressive party. Roberts graduated with honors from Princeton University in 1956 with a Bachelor of Science in engineering; while at Princeton he was a member of the Ivy Club and played varsity basketball on Princeton’s 1954-1955 Ivy League Championship team. He served as an officer in the United States Air Force from 1956 to 1958.

Paula Ellis

Poynter Trustee

Paula Ellis is vice president for strategic initiatives for the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. A member of the Executive Committee, she oversees national programs and new initiatives, and is responsible for developing and gauging the impact of the foundation’s overall strategy. Previously, Ellis was vice president for operations at Knight Ridder, where she oversaw 15 newspapers and was a member of the Management Committee. Throughout her career as a news, corporate and civic leader, Ellis developed deep experience in national and community issues.
