Kelly McBride is a writer, teacher and one of the country’s leading voices when it comes to media ethics. She has been on the faculty of The Poynter Institute since 2002 and is now its Vice President of Academic Programs.

The world’s largest newsrooms, including The New York Times, The Washington Post, CNN, NPR and the BBC, frequently seek her advice for internal decisions and quote her expertise in their stories. Until recently, she ran the Ethics Department and the Reporting, Writing and Editing Department at Poynter.

Butch Ward

Butch Ward is senior faculty and former managing director at The Poynter Institute, where he teaches leadership, editing, reporting and writing.

He worked for 27 years in newspapers, at The Philadelphia Inquirer and Baltimore News American, and was managing editor in both newsrooms. Before joining Poynter in 2005, he spent three years being covered by journalists as vice president for corporate and public affairs at Independence Blue Cross in Philadelphia.

Howard Finberg

Until recently, Howard I. Finberg was The Poynter Institute's director of business development. In this role Finberg looked for new training partners, oversaw the business side of the Institute’s e-learning site and handled the business development aspects of Poynter’s international teaching. He also looked at new revenue opportunities, mostly related to Poynter training. Previously Finberg was responsible for the creation of Poynter’s e-learning project, News University.

Jill Geisler

Geisler holds the Bill Plante Chair in Leadership and Media Integrity at Loyola University Chicago.

She is the author of “Work Happy: What Great Bosses Know,” a workshop-in-a-book that’s helping leaders in all fields, worldwide.

Wendy Wallace

Wendy Wallace oversees Poynter’s grants and assists with other advancement work for the Poynter Foundation and is a member of the Poynter faculty.

She was editor of her high school and college newspapers and interned during her college summers at The Washington Post, Milwaukee Journal and St. Petersburg Times (now Tampa Bay Times). After graduating with bachelor’s degrees in journalism and operations and systems management and an MBA in marketing from Indiana University, she came to work as a reporter for the Times in 1986. At the Times, she covered general assignment, police, schools and business, then worked in circulation marketing, finance and eventually as internal services director, a position similar to marketing director, responsible for creative services, research and event marketing for the newspaper.

Wendy became the high school program director at Poynter in 2004, organizing workshops for high school students and teaching at high school journalism conventions across the country. Because of her marketing and business background, she began assisting with Poynter’s development work a few years later and now manages a grants portfolio of about $750,000/year. She also helped launch Poynter’s revitalized journalism entrepreneurship program in 2010.

She earned Certified Journalism Educator teaching certification from the Journalism Education Association in 2010. Wendy is past president of the Indiana University Journalism Alumni Board, served on the advisory committee for the Journeys in Journalism program for the Pinellas County Schools and is on the advisory board for the Center for Scholastic Journalism at Kent State University.
