Poynter Discounts for Members of the Online News Association have been extended to 2012

As part of our continuing partnership, The Poynter Institute will offer ONA members a 30% tuition discount on a select number of on-site seminars throughout 2012. This offer is in addition to discounts on Webinars and Online Seminars available through Poynter’s News University.

USF St. Petersburg and Poynter News University Collaborate to Offer Certificate in Digital Media

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – In a unique collaboration, The Poynter Institute’s News University and the University of South Florida St. Petersburg have teamed up to offer a USFSP-Poynter Certificate of Proficiency in Digital Media. The assessment supplements the application process for USFSP’s new fully online master’s degree in Digital Journalism and Design.

Designed for journalists and other communication professionals, the online assessment helps professors assess the web-related knowledge and skills of applicants to the program.

Robert R. McCormick Foundation to Fund Free Training for Reporters at Seven Workshops Across the U.S.

ST. PETERSBURG, FL —The Robert R. McCormick Foundation announced today that a $710,000 grant to The Poynter Institute will fund journalism training workshops, or Specialized Reporting Institutes (SRIs), as well as Webinars and other online resources for reporters over the next two years.

Poynter administers this training program for McCormick, and the two organizations have selected SRI hosts for this year to carry out training on these topics:

  • Iraq/Afghanistan war veterans return home,straining government resources for veterans beyond capacity.

Poynter Announces First Two Partners for Journalism 101 Pilot

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (April 11, 2011) –The Poynter Institute’s e-learning project, News University, today announced that it will partner with Florida Atlantic University and Missouri State University as part of the Journalism 101 pilot program.

Florida Atlantic and Missouri State are the first schools that will participate in the pilot program. As partners, they will provide guidance on the development of the online teaching and work with Poynter NewsU to ensure the content meets the needs of the schools and students.

Poynter Announces ONAvations Webinar Series

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (March 8, 2011) – As part of its ongoing partnership with the Online News Association, The Poynter Institute’s News University today announced the launch of the ONAvations Webinar Series. This four-part series is designed to help digital journalists better understand the emerging and expanding applications and technologies that are changing the way news is produced and delivered.

Poynter Receives $400,000 Ford Grant as ‘Sense-Making’ Project Enters Third Year

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The Poynter Institute has been awarded a $400,000 grant from the Ford Foundation to continue the Sense-Making Project, an initiative designed to promote the public’s participation in democracy by tracking, explaining and nurturing new developments in journalism.

In its first two years, the Sense-Making Project trained dozens of non-traditional journalists and entrepreneurs, guided two small startups, documented trends in the Fifth Estate, and provided leadership and training for traditional journalism organizations in the midst of transformation.

Robert R. McCormick Foundation Awards $250,000 for Reporting Workshops

Journalists, bloggers and educators will receive free training on coverage of six topics: political polling, the census, Islam, tracking stimulus dollars, public pensions and the impact of the economic crisis on families.

CHICAGO, March 11, 2011 — A $250,000 grant will fund journalism training on six key topics through the Robert R. McCormick Foundation’s Specialized Reporting Institute (SRI) program.

Poynter Review to Launch With ESPN

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The Poynter Institute and ESPN today announced a new step in media transparency—The Poynter Review Project—in which a panel of Poynter faculty will review ESPN content across all platforms and publicly comment on ESPN’s efforts. This will include monthly essays and additional timely responses as issues arise. The group also will address fan concerns during its 18-month tenure.
