Poynter to Host MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” Team

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The Poynter Institute will host a Luncheon and Community Conversation with Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski of MSNBC’s popular “Morning Joe” show. The event, which is open to the public, will be held at noon on Tuesday, August 28, at the Hilton St. Petersburg, Carillon Park. Tickets are $100.

“Our Community Conversations allow local residents to benefit from Poynter’s work,” said Poynter President Karen Dunlap.

Poynter, American Press Institute and Knight Foundation Team Up to Help Newspapers With Digital Tools Training

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. –The Poynter Institute, The American Press Institute (API) and the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation are teaming up to provide a major public service at a critical time by launching a new program featuring ongoing training in the state-of-the-art digital tools that newspapers need to multiply their productivity and impact.

The Poynter Institute and Craig Newmark to Host Journalism Ethics Symposium

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. —The one-year-old initiative launched by craigslist founder Craig Newmark, craigconnects, is teaming up with The Poynter Institute to host an ethics symposium in New York City in the Fall of 2012. The symposium will lead to creation of a new set of guiding principles for journalists and other content creators concerned with democratic standards of truth in the digital age.

Twenty-five years ago, Poynter created the Guiding Principles for Journalists as a tool for steering ethical choices and policies.

A Tribute to 66 Years of Service by the American Press Institute

The merger of the Newspaper Association of America Foundation with the American Press Institute and staff cuts that followed caused me to think about my time at API and about friends and colleagues who served there. I remember working into the night with a committed and innovative group of journalists in Reston. Many others around the nation and the world have similar memories.

Poynter and the Tampa Bay Rays Build The Write Field

National Reports indicate Pinellas County, Florida, has one of the highest drop-out rates in the country. African-American boys are most at risk: Approximately one in five will graduate from our school system. The Poynter Institute, one of the world’s premier journalism schools, and the Tampa Bay Rays have decided to act by joining with local schools, law enforcement, businesses and community groups to create The Write Field.

The Write Field is a dynamic new mentoring program designed to improve the academic performance and life skills of selected middle school boys.

Poynter News University and the European Journalism Centre (EJC) Launch Innovative New E-Learning Course

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (March 26, 2012) –The Poynter Institute’s News University (NewsU) and the European Journalism Centre (EJC) jointly announced the launch of “Reporting & Writing About Development in the World,” an innovative three-month e-learning course for 40 journalism students from the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia. The course introduces students to the fundamentals of covering international development and is funded by the European Commission’s V4Aid project, which promotes awareness of development issues in the European Union’s new member states.

NewsU Announces Stories Campaign Winners

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (February 23, 2012) –The Poynter Institute’s e-learning project, News University (NewsU), today announced the winners of its second Stories Campaign. For the contest, NewsU asked users to share stories about how the online journalism training site transformed their lives. From more than 100 entries, seven winners were selected including one grand prize, one honorable mention and five merit winners.

Poynter NewsU first ran the Stories Campaign in 2008 to celebrate the site’s third anniversary.

Poynter’s News University and the American Association for Public Opinion Research to Host Webinar on How to Understand and Report on Public Opinion Polls

Poynter, Cronkite Partner on Faculty Exchange

The Poynter Institute and the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University have formed an alliance to improve the teaching and training of journalists in the digital media age.

The first phase of the new partnership will consist of a faculty exchange, with members of the Poynter faculty visiting the Cronkite School in Phoenix several times a semester to give lectures, visit classes and meet with faculty and students.
