Best Newspaper Writing, 2008-2009

Best Newspaper Writing, 2008-2009

Edited by: Thomas Huang and Steve Myers

The 30th edition in the “Best Newspaper Writing” series anthologizes the best newswriting and photojournalism selected by judges of the American Society of Newspaper Editors competition.

The 2008-2009 edition highlights the work of the winners and finalists and features interviews and essays about how they developed their outstanding work.

The book features investigative reporting, editorials, breaking news, narrative writing, columns, photojournalism and stories about immigration, race and ethnicity.

New features this year include an essay on ethical challenges and discussions on how to report and present news online. The book also includes “Sources Say,” which enables sources to speak about their experiences, and “X-Ray Reading,” which dissects and explains the strengths of various stories.

This wide array of exemplary writing and photojournalism provides quality models to analyze and emulate — including selections from five winners and finalists of the 2008 Pulitzer prizes in journalism.

“Best Newspaper Writing 2008-2009” features the following ASNE winners: Kevin Cullen (The Boston Globe), Lane DeGregory (St. Petersburg Times), Marie Dillon (Chicago Tribune), Todd C. Frankel (St. Louis Post-Dispatch), David Gonzalez (The New York Times), Anne Hull and Dana Priest (The Washington Post), Leonard Pitts Jr. (The Miami Herald), Mona Reeder (The Dallas Morning News), and a team from the (Charleston, S.C.) Post and Courier.
