Applications Now Open For Poynter Leadership Academy for Women in Digital Media
Featured faculty include Melissa Bell, Michelle Ferrier, Raju Narisetti and Vivian Schiller
ST. PETERSBURG, Florida (Nov. 1, 2016) – The Poynter Institute is now accepting applications for the 2017 Leadership Academy for Women in Digital Media, a transformative program that provides women the skills and knowledge needed to rise to the highest levels of media leadership. For the first time, the program is open to international applicants.
The third annual Leadership Academy for Women in Digital Media, offered to 28 participants, will take place March 19-24, 2017, at Poynter’s campus in St. Petersburg, Florida. Tuition is free, thanks to the generous support of the McClatchy Foundation, the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, Google and Facebook.
Led by prominent leaders in the startup, tech, media and academic fields, faculty will include Melissa Bell, publisher, Vox Media; Michelle Ferrier, founder of TrollBusters.com and an associate professor at the Scripps College of Communication at Ohio University; Raju Narisetti, CEO, Gizmodo Media Group; and Vivian Schiller, an independent adviser and consultant, formerly head of news at Twitter. Katie Hawkins-Gaar, Poynter’s digital innovation faculty member, will direct the program, which will include Poynter’s Vice President of Academic Programs Kelly McBride and Senior Leadership Faculty Butch Ward.
“We have been overwhelmed by the response to our previous leadership academies, so we are delighted we can address this critical need for training for a third year,” said Poynter President Tim Franklin. “As we have seen with the demand for all our leadership initiatives, including the Poynter-NABJ Leadership Academy for Diversity in Digital Media, the next generation of media leaders turns to us for essential skills to succeed.”
The 2017 program will focus on critical leadership skills needed to rise and succeed in organizations. Sessions will cover how to develop effective management styles, grow business savvy, navigate newsroom and digital culture, master negotiation tactics, build collaborative teams and coach critical thinking.
“Women are underrepresented at the highest ranks of the journalism industry, but it’s encouraging to know that this academy helps address that problem,” Hawkins-Gaar said. “There’s nothing more exciting than watching past graduates take on greater job responsibilities and career opportunities. I already can’t wait to see what the 2017 class accomplishes.”
Poynter’s Leadership Academy for Women in Digital Media was borne out of a two-year partnership with the Online News Association, which is offering its Women’s Leadership Accelerator in February 2017. The end of the partnership ensures that twice the training is available for women, allowing both organizations to help meet demand. Poynter values diversity and will convene a group that represents need and diversity across ethnicity, geography, technology platforms, organization size and skill sets. Because of the small size of the class, the selection committee will give preference to women leaders currently working in digital media who can demonstrate an aptitude and potential for leadership through current job title, project leadership and references. Please note that international applicants must have, at a minimum, a working knowledge of English. Translation services will not be provided.
Participants will cover their own travel costs. However, a limited number of travel stipends will be available and will be determined once the application process is completed.
