As the managing editor of Poynter.org, Steve oversees content on the site, edits articles and blogs, and reports on media news and practices. As part of Poynter’s initiative to “make sense of the news,” Steve writes about the different ways that news travels between traditional news orgs and emerging information sources. He also co-edited “Best Newspaper Writing 2008-2009,” a collection of ASNE award-winning writing and photojournalism.
Before moving to Florida, Steve spent about five years in Mobile, Ala., as a reporter for the Press-Register, focusing on local government accountability, from jail management to hurricane preparation and response. After completing a Kiplinger fellowship at OSU, he returned to the Gulf Coast with a Katrina Media fellowship to investigate the role of faulty flood maps in the hurricane’s destruction. He started working on Poynter.org in 2007.
Steve has also worked at the News & Observer in Raleigh, N.C. and the Charleston (W.V.) Daily Mail.
His posts for Poynter.org are available here.
