Paul Pohlman

Paul Pohlman is adviser to the president and senior faculty at The Poynter Institute. His primary area of interest is in developing newsroom leaders. He helps participants become aware of their leadership styles, clarify their roles and priorities, and develop their coaching and team-building skills.
Using individual analysis, case studies, role-playing and problem solving teams, Pohlman guides participants in practicing leadership skills they can use in the newsroom. In his role as adviser to the president, he works with the president on institute strategy and planning. He coordinates Poynter’s efforts with the many journalism organizations that collaborate on projects with the institute and hold conferences at Poynter. He also works with colleagues on Poynter’s international journalism programs and on new business development. He is a former director of management development programs and newspaper management education at the University of Chicago. He conducted programs for the American Newspaper Publishers Association for many years. He earned a B.A. from Cornell College and an M.A. in history from the University of Chicago.
