Melanie Sill is responsible for The Bee’s print and online news and opinion content and its digital media department. Melanie joined The Bee in 2007 after nearly 25 years at The News & Observer in Raleigh, NC, most recently as executive editor and senior vice president. She reports directly to The Bee’s publisher, Cheryl Dell. Sill joined The News & Observer in 1982 and worked as a reporter, columnist and managing editor before being named executive editor in 2002. Prior to working for The News & Observer, she worked as a reporter at The Transylvania Times in Brevard, NC and in the state capital bureau of United Press International. Sill is a board member for the American Society of News Editors and the California-based First Amendment Coalition and a former board member of the National Freedom of Information Coalition. She also helped found the North Carolina Open Government Coalition, a partner in the Sunshine Center at Elon University. She holds a journalism degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and is a former Nieman Fellow at Harvard University.
