Butch Ward

Butch Ward is managing director and a member of the faculty at The Poynter Institute. During his 27-year career as a journalist at The Philadelphia Inquirer and Baltimore News-American, Butch held a variety of newsroom and positions, including managing editor at both newspapers.
Before joining Poynter, Butch spent three years being covered by journalists as vice president for corporate and public affairs at Independence Blue Cross in Philadelphia. At Poynter, he teaches leadership, management, editing, reporting and writing. He has taught and facilitated programs in newsrooms and for a variety of news associations and groups, including the Committee of Concerned Journalists, American Society of News Editors and APME NewsTrain. He has taught leadership and narrative writing to journalists in Cape Town and Johannesburg, South Africa, and has led Poynter’s efforts to help journalists in seminars, conferences and Webinars explore more effective ways to cover elections for their communities. Butch lives in Wallingford, Pa., with his wife, Donna, who helps run the library for a kindergarten academy of 250 students. Their son, Coley, is marketing director for a Tucson, AZ, food co-op; and their daughter, Caitlin, is a Lafayette College graduate who is pursuing a nursing degree.
